George Kinney Medical Fund Benefit - 6/18/2011 Alamo Drafthouse

George Kinney Medical FundScott Conn's 2007 documentary 'DIRT ROAD TO PSYCHEDELIA: Austin, Texas During the 1960s' will have a special screening at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz, 320 East Sixth Street in Austin on Saturday June 18th at 3 p.m.

Proceeds from the screening will benefit The George Kinney Medical Fund.

Among the interviewees featured in the film are Kinney, Charlie Prichard of Conqueroo, singer-songwriter Powell St. John, and underground comix legend Gilbert Shelton.

The film starts with a lingering look at the Austin folk scene of the late '50s and early '60s, and the drug culture that grew out of it. It also provides a fascinating glimpse into the early days of Janis Joplin. By the mid-'60s, rock 'n' roll was where it was at, and the movie gives some pungent details on the likes of the 13th Floor Elevators, Conqueroo, and Shiva's Headband, as well as Kinney's band, The Golden Dawn, and seminal Austin venue the Vulcan Gas Company.

Presented in association with Mal Thursday's Texas Tyme Machine floating concert series.
